Самайн — это еще и праздник поминовения усопших родственников и близких людей. В этот день, если верить преданиям, духи умерших получают свободу — но только до рассвета 1 ноября. В ночь Самайна усопшие родственники проведывают живых близких людей, наблюдают за празднованием и даже принимают в нем участие. Это праздник мертвых и смерти. В ночь Самайна в мир живых выходят и злые духи, а также другие представители нечистой силы. Они пользуются отведенным им временем в своих целях.
Традиционными занятиями Самайна для кельтов был раздел урожая, а также забой скота, который не выглядел способным перенести зиму. Часть животных приносилась в жертву, часть использовалась для пополнения запасов продуктов на зиму. Приносились и человеческие жертвы. Как правило, это были чужестранцы и военнопленные. Если таковых не было в поселении, выбирали жертв из числа провинившихся его жителей. Урожай собирали только до 31 октября, после Самайна за каждый собранный плод нужно было платить, и еще неизвестно, чего потребуют фэйри взамен.
Огни Самайна имели большое значение. Так называли большие костры, через которые полагалось прыгать, по другой версии предания нужно было пройти между двумя большими кострами. Это делалось для очищения от негатива, который скопился за год — праздник смерти можно назвать лучшим временем для очищения от всего ненужного. Между кострами во времена кельтов прогоняли и скот. По камням и костям, которые оставались после прогорания костров, жрецы предсказывали будущее для всего поселения.
По легендам, холмы открывались и к людям выходили сиды, чтобы присоединиться к празднованию. Они были мудрее, выше и красивее любого человека, если верить кельтским легендам. Иногда они сватались к обычным женщинам и забирали их с собой после окончания празднования. Сиды были способны избавить от смерти и старости. Они приводили с собой свиней, которые снова оживали после того, как становились главным блюдом пира. Сиды предсказывали будущее и могли научить невидимости. Поверья гласят о том, что и Боги присоединяются ко всеобщему празднованию в человеческих или животных обличьях.
Самайн и Хэллоуин — не столько разные названия одного дня в году, сколько почти разные праздники. Самайн отмечали древние кельты, поминая умершего бога, который возродится с началом весны и расцвета природы после холодного времени года. Они приносили ему жертвы, поминали усопших членов поселений, подводили итоги урожая, а также стремились защититься от злых духов, которые тоже имеют доступ в наш мир.
История Хэллоуина начинается с Самайна, но уже после принятия Ирландией христианства. Впервые упоминается он в 16 веке. Тыквенные фонари, отверженный Богом и Сатаной пьяница-Джек, карнавальные костюмы, выпрашивание сладостей — все эти традиции Хэллоуина появились уже после христианизации и превращения Самайна в канун Дня всех Святых, который отмечается 1 ноября. Хэллоуин можно назвать христианизированным Самайном. Нечто подобное наблюдается и в случае с русскими праздниками — славянские дни силы, посвященные языческим богам, стали днями христианских Святых
У кельтов существовали четко обозначенные «начала времен года». Их было четыре. Самайн знаменовал собой приход зимы и отмечался 31 октября. В 7 веке Папа Бонифаций IV утвердил 1 ноября Днем всех святых, желая отвлечь английский народ от языческих обычаев. Позже 2 ноября стало Днем всех душ — когда поминали всех умерших. Однако, традиции сохранились в народной памяти, и победить их до конца так и не удалось.
В последние годы праздник основательно возвратился в Европу, он также популярен и в некоторых азиатских странах. Дети наряжаются в костюмы чудовищ и ходят по соседским домам, выторговывая сладости. Также устраиваются тематические вечеринки, фейерверки, маскарады, а в окно выставляется полая тыква с вырезанными глазами и ртом и свечкой внутри, чтобы отпугнуть духов.
Кстати, тыква — изобретение американцев. А до того в Ирландии и Шотландии страшные маски, в которые потом вставляли свечки, вырезали из реп и картофелин, а в Англии — из свеклы.
